Dine Royal at The Royal Afghan: ITC Windsor

The Royal Afghan is a fine dine restaurant at ITC Windsor, one of my favourite properties in Bangalore. ITC Windsor takes you to a different era altogether and I fall in love with the hotel every time I am there. Be it the food or the ambiance or the hospitality that you talk of, everything is just royal.

Copper candle-stands with glass chimneys, throw a romantic mellow light on the marble table tops, gleaming copper tumblers and the ochre earthenware.  The Royal Afghan is perfect for a romantic date or a small get together.  It’s one of the favourite restaurants of Deepika Padukone and she comes to Royal Afghan with her family most of the times when she is in Bangalore.

Serving the flavours of the North-West Frontier, The Royal Afghan is known for the excellence it has on offer. Before we talk about the amazing food, let’s look at the some highlights:

At The Royal Afghan the tandoori cuisine of the North-West Frontier of India, finds a new meaning. Here are some of the dishes that you cannot miss when here:

Dal Bukhara: Although I wanted to write about this at the last, but I didn’t wanted to take chances, what if you would have closed the browser window. This is what the menu description reads: “A harmonious combination of black lentils, tomatoes, ginger and garlic simmered overnight on slow charcoal fire and finished with cream, served with a dollop of unsalted butter”. One of the signature dishes of The Royal Afghan, truly scrumptious. Savour it with naan or butter roti’s and you won’t forget it ever.

Sikandari Raan: Raan is considered to be the best portion of the lamb, A lot of preparation goes into creating this fine delicacy. A whole leg of spring lamb braised in marinade of malt vinegar, cinnamon, black cumin and red chilli paste and the cooked in the tandoor slow and long. Tender meat that melts in your mouth infused with authentic aromas and taste.

Reshmi Kabab:
Yet again a splendid preparation, tender rolls of chicken mince spiced with cheese, ginger and Royal Cumin, char grilled in the ‘Tandoor’. The balanced smoky flavours fused with the earthy, nutty and mild spicy flavours of the cumin makes it perfect on the platter.

Tandoori Phool: Big cauliflower florets seasoned with yellow chilli and other select spices, coated with spiced batter of gram flour and ‘ajwain’ (Ajowan caraway), deep fied, skewered and char grilled. The ajwain gives a sharp and pungent flavour close to thyme and acts as a contrasting element in the vegetable. This was something very unique and you won’t find anything close to it at any of the restaurants serving tandoori food.

Samundari Khazana: An assorted tandoori seafood platter with exotic collection of fishes and prawns.
